Among them is a figure who in real life might be timid or hesitant, but on the internet, they become outspoken, often espousing their own sense of personal justice and commentary from the safety of their screens. In Chinese internet slang, such people are referred to as 'keyboard warriors'.
Interestingly, the English language uses the same term, 'keyboard warrior'. This phrase encapsulates the idea of someone who is very active in online discussions, often with strong opinions and a robust sense of personal justice, but who may be much less assertive in real-life situations.
For example, we might say, "John rarely speaks up in team meetings, but on our team Slack channel, he's quite the keyboard warrior."
There are a few other English terms closely related to 'keyboard warrior'. The first one is 'troll'. An internet troll refers to a person who intentionally starts quarrels or upsets people on the internet by posting inflammatory or off-topic messages in an online community. For example, "The forum was overrun with trolls who were not contributing anything meaningful to the discussion."
Another term is 'armchair critic'. This phrase refers to a person who gives advice or an opinion on something in which they have no expertise or involvement. Similar to a keyboard warrior, an armchair critic is not directly involved in a situation but freely gives opinions or criticisms. For instance, "She has become an armchair critic of the government, freely sharing her views on social media but never taking any real-world action."
